Oops ! The irate shop owner complained to the highest level, "The Director-General of Education" as he had pre-made 750 sandwiches especially for that day to sell to all the students and teachers on board the ferry! The Director-General contacted my boss but thankfully the two shop owners were able to come to some sort of agreement and he was able to sell his 750 sandwiches! Phew ! The error wasn't entirely my fault but as usual I didn't want to dob in the Senior Office Lady so I ended up taking all the blame for this misunderstanding. I double checked with the Senior Lady in charge and she said yes, so naturally I passed on this information to the store owner but unfortunately this wasn't correct as on this occasion the Cartela stopped off at a different location, opposite to where his shop was located. I received a phone call from a shop owner asking me if the Cartela was going to disembark at a particular beach in the south of the state. When I left school at 15 years of age I began working in a high school office and they also used this ferry for their end of year trips. A few years later it was a great trip for a romantic evening except for going on a blind date.nowhere to escape except to jump overboard ! LoL ! Our teachers didn't fuss as we used to have a ball running up and down the decks and exploring the vessel. It was always a highlight to travel down the river to one of our beautiful beaches for our annual end of year school picnic.
I have fond and not so fond memories of the Cartela. Sadly, time is ticking by for this old vessel as it's deteriorating by the minute and there doesn't seem to be any plans for its future. This wonderful old ferry has lots of history, built in the same year as the Titanic (1912) and was used during the First World War and again it was called upon during 1975, ferrying hundreds of thousands of people across the Derwent River when the Tasman Bridge went down.
